Real clay, built for Southwest Florida weather

Few roofs suit a Southwest Florida home like clay tile. Fired clay holds its color in the Florida sun, sheds heavy summer rain, and gives Mediterranean, Spanish, Tuscan and French Country homes the look they were designed for. European clay tiles bring the profiles and finishes that have been used on roofs in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal for generations.

Fair and Square Roofing installs new clay tile roofs, re-roofs existing clay tile roofs, and repairs clay tile, including roofs with tiles that are no longer manufactured. Every job starts with a free inspection and a written estimate, and every installation follows the Florida Building Code and the tile's Florida Product Approval.

Clay tile profiles

The profile is the shape of the tile and sets the character of the roof. These are the European clay profiles we see most on Southwest Florida homes. Drawings show each profile in cross-section.

Spanish S-tile

One-piece tile with a continuous S-shaped wave. The classic Spanish and Mediterranean look, and one of the most common clay profiles on Southwest Florida homes.

Two-piece barrel (Mission)

Separate pan and cover tiles laid alternately for deep shadow lines. Italian-style coppo and Mission roofs use this profile on high-end Mediterranean homes.

Roman pan and cover

Flat pans joined by rounded covers. A more tailored version of the barrel look seen on classic European architecture.

French interlocking

Flatter interlocking clay tile with raised ribs and channels. Popular on French Country and transitional homes.

Flat clay tile

Low-profile flat clay tiles that suit modern and contemporary homes while keeping the color and longevity of fired clay.

Discontinued, vintage and historic tile matching

Many clay tile roofs in Fort Myers and Naples were built with tiles that are no longer made. When a few tiles break, the hardest part is not the repair. It is finding tiles that match. Mismatched tiles stand out on a clay roof, and some HOAs will not accept them.

We identify the profile, size, color and finish of your existing tile, then look for the closest match among current European and domestic clay tile lines, and reclaimed or salvaged tile. When an exact match is not available, we can move original tiles to the most visible slopes and place the closest new match where it is least noticeable.

Tiles we help match

  • Discontinued and obsolete clay tile
  • Vintage and historic tile on older homes
  • Imported European tile: Spanish, Italian-style and French profiles
  • Custom colors and blends
  • Clay roof fittings: ridge caps, hip starters, rakes and eave closures

Installation

How we install a clay tile roof

01

Inspect and plan

Free inspection, profile and color selection, structure check for tile weight, HOA details and a written estimate.

02

Permit and tear-off

We pull the re-roof permit, carefully remove existing tile we can reuse, and take the roof down to the deck.

03

Deck and underlayment

Damaged decking is replaced, the deck is fastened to code and new underlayment and flashing are installed. This is what keeps water out.

04

Clay tile installation

Tiles are set using the attachment method in their Florida Product Approval, with ridge, hip, rake and eave fittings secured.

05

Inspections

The roof passes the building department's required inspections.

06

Clean-up and guarantee

Broken tile and debris hauled away, and our workmanship guarantee on the finished roof.

Clay tile roof repair

Clay tiles crack when walked on incorrectly, hit by debris or lifted in high wind, and a single broken tile can let water reach the underlayment. We replace broken tiles with matching profiles and colors, re-set slipped tiles, repair ridge and hip fittings, and fix leaks at valleys, walls and roof penetrations. Because clay breaks easily underfoot, clay tile roofs should only be walked by an experienced tile roofer.

Common clay tile problems

  • Cracked or broken tiles after storms
  • Slipped or displaced tiles
  • Loose ridge and hip caps
  • Leaks from aging underlayment
  • Failed flashing at walls, valleys and chimneys
  • Mismatched tiles from past repairs

FAQs

Clay roof tile questions.

What are European clay roof tiles?

European clay roof tiles are fired clay tiles in the profiles and finishes long used on roofs in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal, such as Spanish S-tile, two-piece barrel, Roman pan and cover and French interlocking tile. In Southwest Florida they are used on Mediterranean, Spanish Revival, Tuscan and French Country homes, and on any home where the owner wants the look and color of real fired clay.

Is clay tile better than concrete tile in Florida?

Both are durable choices. Clay tile keeps its color because the color is fired into the clay or a fired glaze, while many concrete tiles get their color from a surface coating that can fade. Clay is often lighter than standard-weight concrete tile. Concrete tile usually costs less. We walk you through both during your free estimate.

Can you match discontinued or vintage roof tiles?

Often, yes. We identify the profile, size and color of your existing tile and look for the closest match among current clay tile lines and reclaimed or salvaged stock. When an exact match is not available, a common approach is to move original tiles to the most visible slopes and place the closest new match on less visible areas, so repairs blend in.

Does a clay tile roof need a permit in Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs or Naples?

Yes. Any re-roof in Florida requires a building permit and inspections from the local building department, such as the City of Fort Myers, Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs, the City of Naples or Collier County. We pull the permit and schedule the inspections.

How are clay tiles attached to resist hurricane winds?

Roofing products in Florida must carry Florida Product Approval, which lists the attachment methods tested for wind uplift. Clay tiles are installed using those approved methods, such as approved tile adhesive or mechanical fasteners, with ridge, hip and eave fittings secured to the same standard.

Why does my clay tile roof leak if the tiles look fine?

On a tile roof, the underlayment beneath the tiles does the real waterproofing. Florida heat breaks it down over time, and it usually wears out long before the clay tiles do. A clay tile re-roof often means carefully removing the tiles, replacing the underlayment and flashing, and reinstalling good tiles along with new ones.

Does my HOA have to approve clay tile?

Many communities in Estero, Bonita Springs and Naples require architectural review approval for roof material, profile and color. We provide the product, profile and color details your application needs.
